The word “tenebrae” comes from a Latin word meaning “darkness” or shadows.” Because of this, it is sometimes called the Service of Darkness or the Service of Shadows. In this worship service we extinguish candles as we recount the events of that week from Palm Sunday through Jesus’ burial. This increasing darkness symbolizes the darkness of Jesus’ death and of hopelessness of a world without God. We conclude by pondering the impact of Christ’s death while also preparing ourselves to celebrate the Resurrection on Easter Sunday morning.
It is our hope that this service is a meaningful one for you as you approach Easter.
